  1. We had a hellacious electrical storm here in NYC Sunday night. The
highlight was an explosion of thunder which made me think that they'd
finally blown up Manhattan. (I was reading on my bed and it literally
knocked me to the floor, so it must have been straight overhead.)

Anyway, this explosion of whatever sort caused some strange reactions
in some of my equipment. Th DVD player was shutdown and reset to
default settings. Audio receiver went off. Computer froze. No problem.
Just had to unplug and plug things to return them to normal state.
Obviously the explosion caused a surge of some kind. (I do run
    everything through protectors.)

One exception. I lost interent connection, and it's still off. The
green ethernet light on the back of the computer has been off since
the explosion, and I'm wondering what's the cause.

First, I thought it was just TimeWarner being knocked out, but I
checked with a neighbor and his was running fine. I plugged and
unplugged everything, modem, ethernet cable, PC power cable. I reset
    the surge protector.

I also relpaced the ethernet cable, and that didn't work.

Is it the modem? My modem has 4 lights -- the modem power light &
cable light are on steady. The PC light and "signal" light is off.
Occasionally, I've notice that these last two flash for a second,
    then nothing.

The computer overall seems perfectly fine. Has my ethernet card blown?
Or the motherboard? Or is it the modem?

    Thanks for reading.

first try right clicking my network places/jproperties and see if the network card is listed. if it is right click on it and chose "repair". if not then right click mycomputer/properties/hardware/device manager and check if the network adaptor is listed or has a yellow triangle.

Borrow a laptop and plug it into your modem. Then you'll know if it's the PC or the modem.

(I assume you do not have a router.)

If the PC, and you have a spare PCI slot, buy an ethernet card and see if that works -- these are very cheap ($5 or so) so worth a try. Otherwise you have a more serious hardware problem and will need to get it to a technician.
