  1. With the range of VCD recoders on the market, and the inevitable moves towards DVD recorders replacing VHS, I was wondering if such a system was available for computer users. Is it possible to record straight to disc using a suitably fast PC and CD Writer. Of course I could simply record to hard disc and then write to disc, but this takes time (Especially as my Re-writing speed is only 4x). I was hoping to use my computer as simply as I can use a VCR. I have a PV-256 capture card which takes a load off the CPU, and the transfer rate is below the limits of 4x disc recording so it should be possible in theory. However I know of no software which would do this (let alone work with the PV-256). Anyone know anything about this?

  2. I have a friend who does this with VCD formated MPGs. He has a ATI AIW capture card and his DVD Player will play MPGs (as long as they are formated correctly and in the CD root directory.)

He uses DirectCD with CD-Rs. He set capture location to the CD drive and records, he closes the sesion when he ejects the disk. It works great. He says the CD's play on his DVD Player and has given me several samples. The only downside is that its VCD, he hasn't tried xVCD, SVCD, or xSVCD. He said his DVD player will not play them. Also, its my opinion that the ATI AIW doesn't make a good MPG1 for VCD.

I have a PV231 MPG card and have been temped to try this but I don't much care for DirectCD. I never use it with CD-R only CD-RW. I got a bad taste for it when CD-R used to cost a lot and DirectCD only worked about 10% of the time. I know that I can't play MPGs from DirectCD formated CD-RW because of Audio Problems.
