16:10 Aspect Ratio

Hope this is not a stupid question.

VLC media player has a aspect ratio and crop setting of 16:10, if you wanted to encode a video to avi, how do you get an aspect ratio of 16:10 from a 4:3 video source?

4:3 is equivalent to 16:12, so to achieve 16:10 you would need to crop off ~3% off top and bottom, or ~6% off one of them.

Assuming you have a 720x480 resolution starting point, cropping 15 pixels off the top and bottom, or 30 pixels on one would do the trick.

What about a 640x480 resolution, does the same apply? Also would encoding at 640X400 do the same thing? I'm
trying to get a 16:10 aspect without stretching.

"without stretching" means

Letterbox for wide 16:9 720x480.
Side bars for 4:3 720x480.

Explain why you want to encode for 16:10? Why encode your video to a non-standard aspect ratio?

VLC can play 16:9 to 16:10. I forget if it stretches vertically or chops off the excess sides.
4:3 will always have side pillars on a 16:10 screen unless you zoom to chop top/bottom.

Yeah, I don't see the point either. And it's more than 6% you'll lose. For example, starting with a 640x480 AVI, making it fill a 16:10 screen means making it 640x400, cropping 40 pixels from both the top and bottom, making it 83% the original height. You'll loose heads and legs.
