Ripping small parts from a DVD

is there any way to rip small parts from dvds without having to convert it to an avi first?

Use dvd shrink in the reauthoring mode.

You might have specified that up front. Filling in your computer details in your system profile would help, as would posting in the Linux forum instead. There doesn't seem to be a huge range of tools for selective ripping, but you might see if Shrink runs under Wine.
