am i able to burn x264 (.mkv file) direct to dvd and play it on a standalone dvd player? or do i have to convert the file using convertx (etc) then have the video_TS folder to burn. is there software to bypass the conversion.. or is this because its a bluray source?

You have to convert. DVD players play DVDs. Even if you have a Divx player, you will have to convert.
FAVC or DVD Flick can do what ConvertXtoDVD does, and often better. They generally handle mkvs, although mkv is a pretty inconsistent format, so you may find you need top do extra steps to get it all happening the right way.Read my blog here.
