I'm looking for some assistance. Basically, I'm convering alot of my VHS tapes to DVDs using a standalone vhs/dvd box. Then, I am planning on converting DVDs into a format to ultimately edit/author and reproduce a DVD.

What do you recommend for this, specific hardware recommendations and/or software Authoring/Editing? What exactly do I need since all of the videos will be on a DVD already.

I'm sure this has been asked and answered so if you can direct me to a previous post, THANKS, i couldn't find anythign specific.

Also, what if any hardware will speed up the rendering/authoring/editing process? My computer specs are up for the task

Try Mpeg VIdeo Wizard DVD, it can import dvds directly and you can do advanced editing and make a new dvds.

If you just need to cut the video you can try Tmpgenc DVD AUthor, import dvd-video, cut/join and make a new dvd.

I'm also looking for an answer to this question..... I have many vhs tapes that I've put on dvd that I'd like to edit. I've found that I need to make them all into avi files but I have like 120 hours of dvd to edit. So finding the fastest way to convert would be great.

If your edit needs are simple cut and join type edits then Womble is probably the best option, followed by VideoRedo. Use a standalone DVD recorder to encode, then use one these tools to edit and author. No conversion is required.

If your edit needs are more complex, or you need to do restoration work, then you need to look at getting a capture card for your PC, and lot of extra HDD space, and you need to put aside a lot of time.

There is no simple way to edit that amount of footage quickly, no matter how good you are. Encoding is the least of your problems, as encoding from source can be done in real-time with the right equipment, and subsequent encoding for DVD can be done as fast as your hardware will allow. Hardware is always and only a simple matter of money. The more you can afford, the faster you can get.

I'm editing basketball games into a highlight film. Would this be considered simple editing? I just want to be able to pick out certain 5 second clips and then save them all and put them all together. I've already got everything on DVD as I burned them from VHS. To me, it seemed so simple yet I can't find a program that will allow me to do it. Thanks for your help.

Womble or videoredo will do it easily

Use VOB2MPG to extract the mpg content from the DVD, trim it down and write the short clips to another folder. When you have all the clips trimmed, put them altogether into the final video. If you use Womble or Videoredo there will be no re-encoding.

The time consuming part is going through 120 DVDs to find all the short clips. If you already know which bits you want it might be easier to use DVD Shrink in re-author mode to select just the short portions direct from the DVD. Write these to the HDD, then assemble later in Videoredo
