Fixing troublesome mpeg files?

Well this started as a problem with hdtv recordings from wintv (from qam on my wintv hvr-1800) having only sound and no video in any other program than wintv itself or Nero showtime (from nero 6) and has evolved into a hatred of wintv after trying program after program (and most crashing on me) I did find that VideoReDo does seem to fix whatever is wrong with it, normally i'd be ok with that but with all this annoyance I've been wanting to figure out why this is happening, mainly because i'm also curious if there is any other way to fix the files then to pay $50 for a piece of software only to do open->save as..

From what the log of videoReDo says, it looks like the problem could be related to the mux rate, but since i don't know much of this myself I was hoping somebody else could help me out

I don't exactly what's wrong and I don't know what tools you have tried but

Have you tried demux the video with for example projectx and multiplex it back to a mpg with for example ImagoMPEG-Muxer? It might help a bit.

Or run it through pvastrumento or MPEG2Repair or Transport Stream Packet Editor.

i've lost track of what i tried..with project x i'm not sure how to use it, i can create an ac3 file but not sure how to extract the video. Mpeg2repair just says 'failed to find video PID. Try different program number or video track' and pvastrumento just seems to crash when pre-scanning the file, ts packet editor seems to just scan the file forever so far, even with a clip that's under a minute (i aborted it when it was scanning for over 10 minutes and gives an error 'Error:Converting boolarray to Bytes Arithmetic operation resulted in an overflow.'

this is pretty much what i've been experiencing with anything else i've tried(mostly tools to convert the mpeg to another file format), most other programs just seem to crash, thanks for the website though, i'll check it out when i have the chance

Sounds like WinTV has mapped the PID's to the wrong location. Or, the applications your attempting to open the WinTV captures with don't support/understand .ts files, or don't support mpeg at HDTV levels.

The .ts files has a header that says video is located at this point and audio is located at this point. That's where the PIDs are.

Use DGMPGDec to demultiplex the video. There should be an option to detect all program IDs. You can set the video to which ever one you want, hit F5 to preview, so you can be sure the settings are correct. After you get the right PIDs, you can save to a d2v file to further encoder through avisynth.

VideoRedo doesn't list any real errors with the files, it does map the Video to xE0 and audio to x80 which standard for DVD mpeg multiplexing.

I have a for WinTV-HVR-1600, and I had the same problem that you are having. After I record, I have trouble paying the video. If I use AVIcodec to see information on the file, it says it's an mpeg2 video 720x480, which is DVD standard. So what I use is MPEG Streamclip, which is free. I open the file and chose covert to MPEG with MP2 audio. It then makes a new file, but when I check the new file with AVIcodec, it says it's an MPEG2 video 1920x1080, which is what it's suppose to be. After I do that, I can play the video with any program, I can also convert the video with any program, which I couldn't before I used MPEG Streamclip. It only takes a couple of minutes to convert it with streamclip, but the only problem you have is you have 2 really big video files, but if you have a big hard drive, it's not big deal, just delete the old file after streamclip.

Dgmpgdec crashes whenever i try to load the video, it seems that mpeg streamclip can handle the file but things don't seem to be quite as fixed as what videoReDo does.(only tested with a single clip however) It's starting to seem like my options are looking like i'd need to buy videoReDo just so i can get the recordings to work properly
