  1. I just purchased a bunch of compusa/memorex black dye Cdrs I heard that these are one step away from the silver and gold plated cd'rs I'm looking for but cant find.
I am trying to get my friends Radio Shack RCA 5910 5 disc DVD changer to recognize the VCD.
It failed so far with the :
    Memorex platinum CD'rw's
    HP CD'rs
    Imation CD'rs

so I'm hoping these black dye ones do the trick.
I have a suggestion for this website for you webmasters...maybe have an indepth profile on each DVD player with VCD capability and have everyone submit a listing of which CD'rs and CDRW's their player will recognize. that would be an awesome resource. I see its started with the compatability list, but more in depth in terms of maker of cd, what kind of dye etc would really be beneficial to! I know with the JVC, Samsung, Panasonic, RCA, SONY, models they are very touch and go. Unfortunatly not everyone owns my Apex 660 sigh..which is without a doubt the best cause it reads everything!

If you check the compatibility list on the right hand side - there is a section for "user comments". In here users have expressed their experiences with different makes and media. Of course unfortunately not every standalone DVD Player has as many comments as others - but how are the webmasters to do this? It's up to all the people who use this site to go there and give their opinion...hopefully you'll soon be including your experience

  3. sorry i doubt there is very much you can do to help. the dvd player usually has to have a dual optical pickup to read the different wavelengths of CDR and CDRW.

the black dye on those discs is solely to protect and shield the disc from scratches and UV rays. i think these discs also make the data last longer.

sony probably shipped all their games with black bottoms so people could keep their games a long time w/out worrying about losing the data and sony customer service probably didnt want to replace discs for a bunch of dumbass 10 year olds that dont know how to take care of them.

  4. I fully agree with you, and thanks for pointing out that other section of this website for me to look at. It is such an incredible resource that I am overwhelmed at times ..I can look here 2 or 3 times a day and always still feel like there is so much to learn from everyone out there. thanks. Sean

  5. Hi,

@ toolio : The Black discs Sony makes are not (Mainly) made to preserve the data longer, but as a copy protection for the playstation. When the Playstation first came out, and the years that followed, there where no black cdr's for sale.
The reason for this being a copyprotection is that black cd's have a different light reflection timing that other colours. The Playstations times this. If the difference in the timing is to big, it presumes a copied/illegal disc is being used and it won't play.
The fact that black cd's last longer was just a bonus.

  6. Psycho,

The PSX reads ordinary CD-Rs just fine.

There may be many reasons why Sony made black discs but copy protection isn't one of them. Perhaps they thought that they just looked "cool".

The black colour isn't the colour of the recording layer anyway. It's just a pigment in the polycarbonate substrate that is relatively opaque to visible light (thus black) while being transparent at infra-red frequencies (thus a CD drive can read them).

There is no credible evidence that the black pigment in the polycarbonate leads to longer CD life.

    Regards.
