Let me get this straight I can convert movie files(avi, divx, etc) to vcd. And then burn this vcd file on a cd-r and play it in my dvd player? Please let me know.

Well on most dvd players, yes.
if you check the dvd players list you'll see if yours is one of those. svcd is better quality if your player accepts the format, but it takes longer to convert
