  3. No but seriously, any free one will be better.

    Check this out:

Lists over 40 tested firewalls, and even tell you which are payware, and which are free.

Online Armor Personal Firewall and Comodo look to be your best bets for free.

Running ZoneAlarm (free). Works better than the old Sygate used to.

  5. Comodo is one of the best I've seen. That said, it isn't really user friendly. You need a bit of advanced knowledge to get the best performance out of it. I'm trying to figure out why it causing programs to open very slowly since the last update.

ZA is definitely more user friendly but I've heard it causes noticable delays in startup and shutdown.

I've used ZoneAlarm (free version) for years.
Never noticed any excessive slowdown, and the PCs I run it on are not particularly fast, so I think I'd notice.
It has a log file function, you might turn that off, who ever looks at those anyway?
Also turn off "check for updates automatically" so it won't nag you to upgrade.

  7. I don't use ZA so I'm commenting based on what I've heard about it on Wilderssecurity.com as far as the slowdowns go.
