  1. Ave,

I have WMV-HD files (WVC1/WMA5.1) which play excellent in my XBOX 360 Tray, however, I would like to play them in my HD-DVD Player. I was trying to use "Ulead DVD Movie Factory 6 Plus" to author them as HD-DVD's, but during the authoring process, close to the end, it keeps giving me "Unexpected Error". It just won't complete the authoring.

Is there any other software I can use to author wmv-hd's as HD-DVD?

    Thanks!

The VC1 video could be hddvd compliant so you might not have to reconvert it...but then I don't know any basic hddvd authoring tool that supports vc1 video.

You could try convert the wmvhd to mpeg2 hd with something else like hcenc and then author with ulead dvd movie factory.

You're right, the VC1 is HD-DVD Compliant - problem is, the HD-DVD Player won't accept the file as-is to play - the disc the file is burnt to has to be HD-DVD Compliant, so it has to be "authored" as HD-DVD.

The other problem is, I converted an MKV -> VC1, so I don't really wish to re-encode perfect quality VC1 Audio/Video all over again.

    Not sure myself...

Yeah, $5,000, plus not very intutitive, and the worst possible GUI for home authoring solution I have ever seen. Don't think so! :P
    What about Ulead VideoStudio?

I would guess that it reconverts to mpeg2 or h264. It should say on the homepage if it supports vc1, if it doesn't mention it = no.

  7. Damn, I'm striking out everwhere. Isn't there anything besides scenarist that authors VC1 -> HD-DVD !?!

I believe that Ulead will accept WMV as input for HD DVD, but there are 2 downsides.
    1) I believe it will insist on re-encoding the video to MPEG-2 format. Ulead's encoder sucks and this is not good.
    2) You need the HD DVD plug in for Ulead. Ulead DVD MovieFactory Plus can't author HD DVD without it.

Ahem, creative people can sometimes find ways to get (wink wink) "evaluation" copies of Scenarist through alternate distribution means. I am not advocating such, I am merely saying it is possible. If you can't read between the lines and figure out what I am talking about, sorry, but I'm not going to spell it out for you. Note that Scenarist is not at all intuitive to use and if you've never used it before, even should you get a copy, you'll probably never figure out how to use it. There are very few docs on the web that tell how to use Scenarist, but as we are supposed to not encourage people to get it via other means, the general response on various forums is "If you bought it, you'd have to the docs that came with it", etc.

Well, I'm going to skip your very generous & sensitive 'wink wink' part out and cut right to the chase. I got a hold of Scenarist 4.2 and I do have all the Docs that came with it. I know that Doom9 forums has some guides on using Scenarist, and well, while it may not be my choice of Application just because of the horrible GUI, I guess the thing is - Is Scenarist the *Only* authoring solution in the world at present that can take VC1 and author to HD-DVD without Re-Encoding? Shocks me!!

True - Ulead's Encoder is not the best, besides, I have perfectly encoded VC1 WMV-HD's. I'm not about to let some other encoder spoil my good work. I have the HD-DVD Plugin for Ulead, that's not the problem - I'm just not open to it re-encoding my VC1.

It's very disappointing that Scenarist is the only solution - If I can't find any other, I'll have to get my hands down & dirty in it. I've used DVD Maestro before - it's not that far off from Scenarist - it might take some time to catch up, but it's not impossible.

Thanks mate - I'll keep looking though before I settle down on Scenarist.

  10. There is a tool from Netblender called Do Studio which will mux a VC-1 stream. In fact, since Sonic quit selling Scenarist v4 thats the only option for professional use (ie: excepting a VC-1 stream)

That WVC1 you have will not be HD DVD compliant - not all VC-1 streams are alike. You might want to check out doom9 if theres a way to get that file to compliant.

Not many HD DVD or BD option when working with advanced codecs like VC-1 or AVC.

I was looking at this Do Studio, couldn't really figure out much, but might give it a shot.
The WVC1 I had is indeed HD-DVD Compliant - It was encoded to be HD-DVD Compliant, however, the problem is that it has to be 'authored' as an HD-DVD Disc for it work in a standalone HD-DVD Player.

  12. What did you use to encode it? There'a limited number of HD DVD encoders that do VC-1.

It's a pretty neatly guideline(d) procedure by a professional, using CoreAVC, Haalli Media Splitter, AC3 Filter & TmpgEnc Xpress 4 with a custom 720p/1080p profile.

  15. Ok - Baldrick closed my other post in the 'Newbie Conversion' - but not before he posted something extremely peculiar - "ConvertXtoHDVD" !!! That struck my attention! Is there such a thing - or is it about to release?

That probably would solve my problem. Right now it seems I'm stuck with Scenarist, and I'm really not able to figure it out as yet!!
