QT file w/subtitles separate - VLC - how to combine to Toast

Howdy Folks;

Have an avi. file with QT icon - plays great - subtitles file is separate and in a VLC icon - how do I go about combine these both to burn into Toast

If by "burn into Toast" you mean burn as DVD-Video, then Toast alone won't cut it.
ffmpegX can render .srt subtitles for DVD (selectable), as well as encode AVI to DVD. The resulting VIDEO_TS folder then can be burned with Toast.

1st attempt went fast and no audio or subtitles -
though in preview it played great
2nd attempt now - details-
Source format - AVI , mpeg4 mp3 - target format- avi DivX mpeg4 mencoder
mpe audio - in Filters - I checked VOB subtitles- 10 - Burn ( you mention .srt- this will be 3rd try )- Loaded from subtitle file I downloaded with original avi file- font size 2

can I do this better or different - a noob to FFmpeg

ok - all three tries come up QT avi file - plays fine - no subtitle
is there an instruction to FFmpeg
as when I sample( from original QT avi file) in mplayer - I get subtitles fine fine - just playing in QT none

My first impression was that you aimed for DVD-Video, but your conversion is AVI to AVI?
Is your subtitle file in SubRip format (foo.srt)?
The loaded subtitles have to be a text based format (usually <200kB), not an image based format like idx+sub (usually >1MB).
Only check 'VOB subtitles' if the source file is a VOB with embedded subtitles, which you aim to use.
The top line is (VOB subtitles, stream no, format) is ignored for loaded subtitles in the second line.

Howdy Case :

the file I have is avi with QT icon - plays great but only in German - the subtitles file for the film is separate file
with VLC icon - Subtitle file - 3.8mb , no file format - but when opened in VLC and I get info ( apple " i " ) under information - 30 streams appear - under stream 0 - reports "codec" spu , language - english , type- subtitle

the QT file played in VLC plays fine fine - no subtitles - yet played in MPlayer - I get the subtitles

any ideas ?

The icon is dependent on your system, as that shows the default application for that document. The same file could show a different icon on a different system, as it depends on local preferences. As such, the icon has no relevance on conversions.

3.8 MB suggests an image based subtitle file, because of the large size. The only images based subtitle file format I know is VobSub, which should consist of a .sub file and an .idx file, where the .sub file holds the images and the .idx file holds the time tables.

Odd. Did you check if maybe the filename extension is hidden by the Finder? (See Cmd-I in the Finder to check.)

Possibly each language for multiple languages is a separate stream.

VLC only recognizes VobSub by default if both .sub and .idx are present, and the first part of the filename is the same as the movie file, and the subtitle files are in the same folder as the movie file.

Unfortunately, ffmpegX won't use VobSub for input in conversion.
Maybe you can find a SubRip (.srt) version of the same subtitles somewhere else?
