Basically I am ripping a DVD to my computer then running it through VirtualModDub using the deinterlacing and saving it as uncompressed. After that I am using windows media encoder to convert it to wmv to play back.
Now I know this is a very simple way to do this but are there any inherent problems with doing it this way.
I have gone through a number of the great guides here and am basically a bit confused what is the best way.

Are you sure that your source is interlaced? Most commercial dvds are not. But if you are converting from a home recorded dvd it's probably interlaced and then you might get better quality if you use a better deinterlace filter in virtualdub, like http://neuron2.net/smart/smart.html .

Another method would be to use AutoMKV that can rip and convert directly to WMV, not the simpliest tool but you click on it for guides.

I am pretty sure it is interlaced as when i do not run it through that filter i get a lot of jagged edges when there is sharp movement, I will give that other filter a try too, thanks for your help

Or you could frameserver from virtualdub to WME, and save the need (and space) for an intermediate uncompressed file. Read my blog here.
