What's the best way to backup an episodic DVD and take out all the preview bloat-material and split the DVD into 2 DVD-r's so no quality is lost and the main menu still works?

I did some searches on this but nothing seems to be clear cut.

I would use dvdfab, it's not free but it would be the easiest to use if you want to split and keep menus. Test the trial version.

Vobblanker can do this for you.

In addition you can use pgcedit to clean up by disabling buttons. Both freeware
