I overheard these two guys at my local university talking. One said that their Uncle got some software from a Big Lots store that allows you to record streaming video from the internet, but they didn't remeber what it was called. Apparently with your mouse cursor, you click on the screen and make a square and whatever is in that square you'll be able to record. Now if anybody knows all Big Lots stores have different stock in them, so it's not like I could go into any Big Lots and find the exact same software. Does anybody have any idea what this software is called?

  2. Dunno about the specific software you mean, but per your description CamStudio works similarly.

It is a crap way of recording streaming video, and should be used only as a means of last resort.

WMV Recorder is a much better way of recording streams, and it's not all that expensive.
