You can find out all you need form my forum post's , and guide's , but to make it simple .

Dvdauthorgui (dose all the basic need's for dvd authoring)
Bbmpeg (convert's avi to mpeg2 with mp2 audio)
 Besweet (convert audio to ac3)
The gimp (menu design , and support's png with layer's for motion menu's)
Virtualdub (frameserve to bbmpeg , extract audio at 48khz , clipping , joining , resizing and more)
Pgcedit (for editing navigational in dvd project's)
Batchdemux (for extraction of m2v and m2a from mpeg2 file's)

If dealing with dv , grab free dv codec's and converter's in tool section (allow's vdub to edit dv)

Avisynth (motion menu stuff and more)
Visualsubsync (if your handy , create subtitle's)

 Imagtool's (burn dvd's , simple)

 Other tool's :

 Dvdslideshowgui
 Slide show movie maker
 Ifoedit
 Vobedit
 Rejig
 Quenc
 subrip
Wax2 (has stability issue's if pushed , but has many advanced feature's)
Transition's for dvd menu (another handy tool)

That would cover the basic's .

Might write a list of all those I have to make this simpler next time someone ask's ...

As for guide's , check those I have posted , they relate to most of the above program's .
Then check out the rest .

 Notice , I use freeware ...

If something cannot be done using freeware , then you move onto commercial product's ... atleast you are given a chance to learn before wasting money on poorly conceived product's (many are) ...

What is the best way to split .AVI files and save out the individual files? How can you edit the file and save an .AVI file?
-
What kind of AVI file? There are dozens.

 Tools differ.

You gotta go into those guides listed on the left side to find out how to do things.
A few days searching and you will find a few answers.

I have a question that is related to this topic. I downloaded some videos (labeled AVI, though one of the ones I converted was really MKV....). I converted them into XviD to make the filesize smaller. I also switched to the English Audio track on one. The problem is, on the one I switched to the English track, I noticed that in both the original Japanese and in English, the audio is not properly sychronized with the video. How do I go about fixing that in an AVI?

dragonrazor: No, it's not related. Create a new topic instead.

actually, yes it is. If you read the topic, it is Tips on editing AVI files. the files are AVI, and unfortunately, i need to edit the audio to resynchronize it.
