Have a question.. Just made the upgrade to HDTV and i have a question.... Whenever I play 16:9 aspect ratio dvds on my xbox 360... the black bars are gone (i like this) but whenever we play the same exact dvd on our other player hooked into the tv... the black bars are there and the picture looks really squashed... just wondering what causes this and why my 360 reacts differently.. our dvd player is hooked in through component cables and so is my 360.... Only 1 dvd I put in the xbox showed black bars and I could quickly get rid of them but any other dvd ive tried thus far looks squashed to hell...

    anyone know what causes this?

    Squashed in what way?

Are these commercial DVDs? Most movies aren't 16:9 and will have some black bars top and bottom.

If the DVD is 16:9 (e.g. a TV series like 24 or Lost), then the player should fill a 16:9 screen. If not, the player needs to be set for 16:9 or wide, componet analog output. In most cases, a progressive setting will also give better results.

yes these are commercial dvds all i know is it would be fine and all but it looks INCREDIBLY squished maybe a bit more than that last photo I can switch to a few different aspect ratios but its quite annoying... my 360 seems to rid of the black lines completely automatically from what ive seen but my standalone doesnt on ANY dvds... it just looks squished and kinda unnatural imo..

also this is the tv I am using

the xbox 360 is set to 1080i but i dont standalone to mess with resolutions and all that i dunno i could always go pop a dvd in and show u what I mean

What is the aspect ratio listed for the movie? Most will be 2.35 or 2.40:1 and will have letterbox like the lower left picture. It isn't squished, the movie was made that way.

devils rejects wasnt a good example i noticed it being squished more on freedom writers (rented copy so i cant get the aspect ratio for you)

devils rejects ratio is listed as 16x9 widescreen 1.85:1 dvd screen format

1.78:1 was is the listed aspect ratio for freedom writers (the dvd in question) but seriously the people looked like they were in a funhouse in freedom writers they all looked squished lol trust me i have had experience watching letterboxed films and they never seeemd squashed on a normal tv i know this isnt a normal tv just doesnt seem like something is right..

When you got the widescreen TV set you didn't change the output of the DVD player to reflect the new TV set. Go into the player setup and change it from 4:3 output to 16:9 output. It may use different wording than that, but once you find the right place in the setup, you'll quickly figure it out. At the moment the player is adding the black bars to keep the aspect ratio for output to your old 4:3 TV set.
