  2. Have you got the 'Allow Broadcast of name (SSID)' option ticked in the wireless settings of the Netgear router? Also, is the wireless light (radiating lolipop) on the front of the router lit?

yes to the radiating lolipop, and how do i 'Allow Broadcast of name (SSID)' option? I have read on the net that a few people have had this problem but no one knows how to fix it?

  4. You need to log onto the router (internet explorer, type in http://192.168.0.1 into the address box at the top. You should then be asked for a username and password. The default Netgear user name is "admin" [without the quotes] and the default password is "password" [again, without the quotes])

On the left side of the router status window is the main menu. Click on the 'Wireless Settings' option and you should find a tick box labelled 'Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)', make sure it's ticked and then click on the 'Apply' button at the bottom of the screen.

If the channel number is above 11, you may want to drop it down to 11 or less. (Some wireless adapters will not pick up channels above 11!)

While you're at it, I seem to remember that AOL needs the MTU setting dropped down to 1400 otherwise you won't be able to view some websites (including most of the Microsoft ones!) To do this you need to click on the 'WAN Setup' option in the menu on the left and type "1400" [minus the quotes] into the 'MTU Size' box then click on the Apply button.

I'm assuming that you've already set up an AOL screen name & password specifically for the Router? If you're using your own screen name then you'll probably have problems as AOL will think that there are two people trying to log on as you at the same time.

    Hope this helps.

Haven't tried this router with vista but I imagine it won't be too different from xp...is it?
As you are using a laptop...
Have you enabled it for wireless- some laptops have a switch (on the case) to enable wireless (my wife’s Acer does)
You can also enable and disable wireless on some laptops by pressing (I think) Ctrl and F2 - take a look at the keys it should say something like FN for function on the Ctrl key with a wireless symbol on the F2 key.
You have already set up the router for wired so the router and your connection is good.
The router by default is usually set up as it should be- have you changed any settings- if so change them back or connect via ethernet again and log in as per Tim’s advice and reboot the router via diagnostics tab and then go back to the set up tab (top left) and allow it to find your connection then enter your aol address including aol.com and enter your (email address) password

Now go to wireless settings and they should be for b & g and it will likely be on channel 11 (but this can be changed if you have interference). Rename your network (NETGEAR I think is the default and everyone knows this). Check broadcast of SSID is on (for now you can switch it off later if you want). Select encryption (I use WEP as xp does have some issued with WPA and this router (from Netgear support) and select shared key. Enter your key in box 1 and make a note of it somewhere- you can get the router to generate its own key via an entered password if you like- I think your key has to be 12 characters numbers and letters (but I can’t check right now cos I’m at work).
Select apply and then go to (I think) WLAN set up and change the MTU value to 1400.

    Now….

To connect in xp I do the following to enable it – but it may be a bit different on vista.
Right click the small icon in the system tray (right hand side) and select view available wireless networks. Click add if your network is not listed (or properties if it is). Type in your network name and then select “connect even if network is not broadcasting) but this only necessary if you have switched of broadcast of SSID.
Select shared in network authentication box and select WEP in data encryption and DESELECT “a key is automatically provided for me” and then enter your key (twice) then click OK and then OK again and your laptop should now connect after about 5 to 10 seconds.

One other thing if this doesn’t work go to control panel and then network connections and make sure to tick never dial a connection.

    Hope this helps…
