I want software that copies DVDs and transfers torrents to playable DVDs!

I use G4 Macs with OS 10.4.9.

I have DVDBackup, MacTheRipper 2.6.6 and Toast 7.0.2, but I've never been able to successfully copy a DVD. I had a trial version of DVD2ONE, but it has expired and they won't let me download a new trial version for free.

I tried following the newbie guide for the DVDBackup-DVD2ONE-TOAST process of copying DVDs, but it never worked. A Mac friend of mine says the DVD copy process is easiest with MacTheRipper and Roxio Popcorn— which costs $50.00.

Before I spend any money, I want to know what software I can buy for my Macs that will not only backup and copy my DVDs, but also record torrent files (mpeg, Quicktime, avi, etc.) to playable DVDrs.

What is the best program for the least amount of money I should get?

• Sort-of like DVD2oneX and Popcorn, Toast has a Fit-to-DVD setting to recompress VIDEO_TS folders to fit on a single layer DVD-R.
• Toast will encode mpeg, Quicktime, avi, etc. to playable DVD-R.

Visit ripdifferent.com and join the forums. There are later versions of MTR that are current (for a donation). The later versions using main feature only usually mean you don't have to shrink to fit.

After doing a proper rip you would be suprised how little actual movie is on a disc.

I tried the Help instructions on Toast again and finally got it to compress and record to a DVD-R with 4.7 GB.

Now I want to know how to record to a DVD+R DL with 8.5 GB so I don't have to sacrifice any digital information or quality.

I've burned several dl's and none would read outside of the drive that wrote them. Memorex, Sony and Verbatim brand, it didn't matter. I've given up on dual layer for now.

Dual layer burns are usually more, not less compatible than single layer burns.
Maybe you forgot to "FINALIZE" or "CLOSE" the session on the disc?

No.

DVD+R DL media is hovering in the 60-75% range, a good 15-20% below both DVD-R and DVD+R. The DVD-R DL is something so low it's really not measured, it's less than 50%.

Well, Frobozz beat me to it and answered your other thread,
so I'll help with this one.

Many newer DVD deal with arcane copy protection schemes
that can only be cracked with the newest MTR (donationware)
and the newest DVD2ONEX (payware), if you are going
to back them up to Single Layer disc (DVD-R).
There's just no way of getting around that, as
Popcorn 2 and Toast 8
(both Payware) are sucking badly in this arena now.

As for torrent files, most are a flavor of XVID, DIVX, or h.264.
Toast relies upon Quicktime to process these files.
Install the Perian Codec into Quicktime, and that will help
with getting them to disc.

I use HP DVD+R DL and Verbatim DVD+R DL in my Pioneer -109
and I am able to play them back in my RCA and Magnavox players. What are you using to burn them with and how?
UDF? Authored DVDs using Toast Video Tab? Making sure
to select the option of DL vs DVD or CD in the lower right corner?

What speed did you burn at.

Like Terry, I have burned about 50 Verbatim Dls and they all play in various Set top players. I use Toast 8 to burn with. I burn at 4x.

I have two Pioneer 107D superdrives. One was internal, one was in a LaCie firewire box. I put the
Pioneer 112D inside my eMac after realizing the 107's couldn't read dl's burned by the 112.

I used Toast 6.1.1 to burn. I let Toast choose the speed. Some discs were movie folders burned as data udf, some mounted as dmg's and burned as an image file and some simply made as copies.
Only copy mode would finalize and verify. The other methods would generate an error after finalizing so Taost would refuse to verify.

ALL played correctly in the 112. None would even mount in the 107's. They barfed them as unreadable.

I'll try once more and force Toast to 1X burn. The Memorex's are +R 2.4X, the +R Sony's don't have a speed on the label, but dvd media inspector says they are Riteks'

Uh oh. I never even saw that. I just assumed Toast was smart enough to choose. I never checked that off when switching between cd's and dvd's. I'll burn one now and post back.

No, still no luck. When burning anything but a copy I get -5001 error results: "afp authorization springboard continue" at the very end. The disc reads fine in the 112.

there's your problem.
DL support wasn't firmed up until version 7.
Toast 6 had numerous problems with DL media,
that was inherent with the program and it not being
accustomed to DL media.
When Toast 6 was released, even patching up to 6.12,
DL media was in it's infancy as a DVD Spec.
TOAST 7 was the true first version of the program
that was written to take advantage of the media spec.

I use to have numerous problems under Toast 6 with the
then fledging DVD DL media, but upgrading to Toast 7
fixed a lot of those issues.


if you choose to continue using Toast 6, you could try a firmware upgrade
to enable the drive to better read the default speeds of the media by
it's manufacture code, but there is no guarantees that this alone
will fix your 5001 errors. To overcome those, you will still need to upgrade Toast
to 7, which will have a new internal db that will recognize the manufacture codes
of various DL Media. The only one that Toast 6 was wrtitten to work with is Verbatim
DVD+R DL media. It had numerous problems with Fujifilm, Memorex, HP and Sony
branded DL media, which Toast 7 doesn't, due to the fact that the internal db on
the media was updated in Toast 7. This database is what enables it to know
what speed's the media can be burned at, as well as what manufacturer
made the disc. (Disc info) This db is also what makes it "read" or "not read"
the blank disc...

The other methods would generate an error after finalizing so
Toast would refuse to verify.

It's refusing to read the disc, because it's db says the disc isn't supported.
this was fixed in TOAST 7.

Still no success. I couldn't find Toast 7 so I got 8 and switched to 10.4.9 on a fw drive. Toast 8 likes Verbatims more than Sony. I can only choose 2x as a burn speed with Sony +R dl, but when I let Toast choose "Best Speed" it burned the Verbatims at 6X average and sometimes over 10x and they are only rated 2x

I still get the -5001 OS Error every time, at the very end of writing the leadout. The discs still read in the 112 but not in the 107.

I give up.

I don't think you can burn Dual Layer media at faster than 6x yet...Hmmm... not doubting you just confused...as Toast ordinarily senses the medai and throttles the burn speed

dcos is right...At "Best" selection, Toast will burn the media at it's
top speed according to the specs in its database.
There is some media that is being made that will allow on certain burners to burn at up to 6x speed, but DL is best burned
at 2x speed for max quality.

Now for Toast.
When you got 8, did you uninstall Toast 7?
did you do a proper install, such as :

Run Disc Utility, repair disc, repair permissions,
trash Toast 7 and all prefs,
and Install Toast 8, inputting SN and such?

Have you also tried updating the firmware in the -107?
And the -107 is what is causing the majority of the -5001?
is the -107 in a FW case or internal? is the -112 internal
or in a fw case? Last, you say you upgraded to 10.49,
was this the software update or standalone combo update
downloaded from Apple?
