recently I installed (and deinstalled) a few video converter programms and
aparently one of them installed or enabled the old classic media player v6
(which was not mentioned during installation!)
Now when I open a page where it has an embedded streaming like:
<EMBED Width="368" Height="322" SRC="http://url"></EMBED>
it opens (or tries to open) it in v6 but because it's a drm stream which
WMP11 had correctly been using it does not work.
So my question is: how do I disable this older version? I've unchecked all
extensions but there is no 'streaming-media' tab or anything...

Start WMP11 (usually in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPlayer.exe), go to Tools -> Options -> File Types. Make sure "Windows Media File (ASF)" and "Windows Media Video (WMV)" are selected.

The browser MIME-type handlers could've been altered. Which browser are you using?

I think you can change them in Windows Explorer's 'File Types' dialog, but as I'm currently on a Vista system, I can't check XP's way of doing it. (That, and I can't remember the MIME designations for Windows Media streaming, either. Don't forget, as well, that there are 'load' files for streaming media, like .asx files, so those need to be changed.)

I tried editing the registry but no luck.

It was changed in IE and also in Firefox, so I suspect it's something deeper.

I couldn't wait anymore cuz it was driving me nuts so I just reinstalled WMP11 over the existing copy of WMP11 and now it's back to normal again.
Thank god the DRM accounts that were active still work.

So... no real solution, but it's solved...
