  1. Good evening fellas,
I have just created an SVCD with TMPG and had a few questions as to how I should author and burn it. I have read great reviews about the Ulead DVD MovieFactory and I am interested in including a menu and chapters. I was wondering if there are pauses in the playback between chapters. I was also wondering if the chapters and menus in anyways makes playback worse.
    Thanking you in advance,

  2. In regards to DVD authoring, my experience so far is that ULead's chapter-points are completely unnoticable during playback. Besides, they would be worthless otherwise. Can't say for sure if this is different for SVCD.

  3. I've downloaded the demo from download.com and I was quite satisified with the performance of DVD Movie Factory. The demo is fully fucntional with a 30 day trial. And I'll be making the purchase when it's over.

I made an XSVCD with "chapters", menus and background music for the menus. I even encoded the video clips using the encoder that comes with Movie Factory. I had to make an XSVCD because the encoding template for SVCD did not produce good enough quality for my Pioneer DV-343 player. So I had to go in and adjust the bitrate myself. But if TMPENC is working fine for you stay with it.

I've observed two playback modes; the first is after you press play from the menu. All of the tracks or "chapters" are played sequentially with slight pauses in between.. The other mode involves pressing the number of the track from the remote control keypad. Once you do this the tracks starts playing and when it is complete you go back to the menu.

  5. Now that I've tried it, I must say I was impressed. But I still have a question. When using the mode where I select chapters from a menu, the first 10 seconds of playback within a chapter has a frozen picture but audio is playing. If I can figure this out, I will be satisfied with this powerful program.

  6. Speed301, how did you set the parameters for XSVCD in DVDMF?
    I also have a DV-343.

  7. I've stopped using MovieFactory as it introduces audio sync problems towards the end of the SVCD. I get the problem on my DV-343 and on WinDVD on my PC.

This last one is true... it's a pretty bad problem, particularly with the background music in the menus... it'll skip randomly and chop off pieces of the music...

The menu creation and chaper point selection is pretty easy (TSCV has a way to go, hint hint hint) And it looks pretty good, but it has severe limits.

It's editing capability (Capture --> Edit) is probably the only superb thing about this program. It can pretty seamlessly snip out clips and merge them. Much more seamless than previous Ulead products. But this is useless, since it's MPEG-2 encoding is merely so-so.

While it supports SVCD material with strange bitrates, even those made by other programs (mine are all encoded with CCE and multiplexed with bbMPEG), it does not support 3:2 pulldown SVCD's as near as I can tell.

There's probably a better solution coming down the pike. (Like TSCV, if it becomes easier to use, hint hint hint)

  9. I don't find TSCV That hard to use, Its just that MovieFactory comes with so many nice menu templates. I would like to use those templates in TSCV.

  11. Is it the fault of Ulead's movie factory that the lip syncing is off sometimes?
