  1. someone was saying, in a message in a forum, that they had a video card, which had a coaxial cable jack, which let them capture ANYTHING from the internet. All they had to do is connect it to a vcr, and voila! I am wondering if something like this exists, and where to purchase one. Anyone got any ideas?

There are plenty of video cards that have coaxial inputs, but that is for a tuner input from a TV signal. I'm not sure where the internet would come into it.

And there are video cards that have coaxial output, but that is generally referring to SPDIF digital audio out.

Alternately, they may be talking about the output of a cable box, but that would probably be a composite output or a MPEG HDTV signal. Still, that doesn't relate to the internet.

Or they may be saying they can capture whatever is displayed on the monitor from the internet, but that can be done with software. Or they may be converting the VGA or DVI signal from the video card to a composite or S-video signal out to a VCR. That is fairly simple and just needs a video card that has 2 video outputs. Don't expect great quality that way, though. Not much different than sending the computer video to a TV.

They would have to be more specific about what they are 'capturing'.

  3. yes, that's what i was meaning to say. The video output is displayed on the tv monitor, or recorded on a vcr. I don't know how good the quality would be, but with all the "protected" content out there, it sure would beat it. I don't know how to get some pretty good quality video from protected internet videos any other way.

Do it all the time here ...

Via video cards tv out to vcr .

Either via cloned display mode , or via application to tv only (work on pc while watching video on tv) .

Internet , software , and pc game recordings .

I even have the geforce 6600 tv output working in pure dos ... the frequency needs modification here as it's double the rate required for the tv ... good for bios / pure dos recordings .

    -------------------------------

For screen recordings in os , the screen res needs lowering to 800x600 ... as dvd is below this scale ... there is still noticable lose in quality ... fonts mainly , should these end up being used for dvd projects ... improvement is done though the dual pass encoding ... or even quad pass encoding .

Some programs are impossible to use unless one knows the keyboard nav commands used by each application , as buttons on the bottom of some tools will remain off screen in this lower res format .

    --------------------------------

Vga conversion box's , while they can be expected to work within reason ... affect the clarity of fonts and icons on norma pc screen .

    --------------------------------

So , you want to have either :

1: A vga graphics card with tv out function

    or

2: A vga to tv conversion box

    Plus cable and vcr ...

Back to pc via capture device ... either built into vga , or pci / usb .
