There's an .MKV file I want to play, and the only program that seems to be able to play it at all is Media Player Classic (I tried VLC but the program hits an error and quits, WMP won't recognize it at all, and RealPlayer says it needs new software to play it, but after searching it finds nothing. I also tried to see if the video had some sort of problem that could be fixed with VirtualDub, but it looks like it won't recognize MKV files). The problem is, while the audio is crisp and clear, and video doesn't move smoothly. It acts all framey. The file is 1.27 GB in size, and has one audio, with a subtitle option.
Is there something I need to change in the MPC preferences? Do I need a new program entirely? Should I convert the file to an .AVI or something, maybe (if I do, I need to be able to keep the subtitles)? Could it just be my computer's fault?
Please help me figure out how to make the video play smoothly and with the audio. If you need any more info, just tell me how to get it and I'll look for it. Thanks.
EDIT: It sounds like it's an H264 file, from what I'm hearing.

If it's a high resolution h264 it will require a very fast computer. It might help if you use haali media splitter and coreavc(not free though)

That's why I was looking to maybe convert the file, so it wouldn't be too fast for my computer.
I tried AllToAVI but it broke it down into pieces, so I don't know how to play it (I still have the original MKV file though). It broke it into an .SRT, .SVC, .MP3 audio file, and a Video File.
I also tried this thing called mkvmerge GUI, but it didn't work either, unless I missed something.
Using Mediainfo, I get these stats:
Container and general information:
Matroska: 1.28 GiB, 1h 44mn
1 video streams: MPEG-4 AVC
1 audio streams: AC3
1 text streams: ASS
Encoded date: UTC 2006-02-13 01:24:00
Writing application: mkvmerge v1.6.5 ('Watcher of the Skies') built on Dec 7 2005 (text from here goes beyond program window)
Writing library: libebml vo.7.6 + libmatroska v0.8.0
Cover: ChaparralPro-SemiBold.ttf / ChaparralPro-SemiBolddlt.ttf / Eager Naturalist.ttf / (goes on beyond window (I stretched it as far as it could go))
First video stream
768*432 (16/9), at 23.976 fps, MPEG-4 AVC
First audio stream
Japanese, 48 KHz, 6 channels, AC3
First text stream
English, ASS
It also looks like the Bitrate is 1742 kbps. -
I have the same problem as you did, and I think the file is corrupted. It have nothing to do with the codec or media player, just bad luck...
Don't waste your time, I think it would be better if you search for a different version of the movie or from a different sources...
