    Hi all:

This problem is driving me crazy.

A few weeks ago I thought I had solved the problem instaling the directX SDK august2006.

However this has not solved my problem.
It freezes when playing DVD's or AVI files, no matter which player I use, WMP, KmPlayer, WINdvd etc.. etc...I have to re-starr with reset button.

Any ideas about this problem ??

    hilario.

Sudden freezes (specially when encoding always makes me suspect bad cooling - does it freeze as soon as you start playing, or after a while?

    Hi mats:

I thought about that too but it happens randomly.

Sometimes just at the very start sometimes it takes more time !!!

I am planning to make more tests and will be back with results.

    tks anyway.

    hilario.

Anyway, I'd take a peek at the CPU cooler to see if it's clogged up with dust.

I agree with checking cooling issues first ... cpu heatsink and fan and video card fan etc... but if that doesn't solve it then look at video codec conflicts or even video card driver conflicts.

Do you use ffdshow for video playback? If not try it. If yes check the settings, disable them or try another version of the program. Do you use video overlays within your player? With wmp you can disable it. Tools, options, performance, advance and tick overlay off for both video and dvd. If you are not using MPC then try that and change the video renderer. try another player like BSPlayer etc.. some are less demanding on system resources.

I had a similar experience when I used an nvidia card and I had updated my video card drivers and somehow they caused a conflict but only when certain demanding features were accessed. So it was inconsistent. When I went back to the original drivers that came with the card it solved the issue.
