  1. I'd like to know if anyone has burned SVCD mpegs onto DVD-R discs.

I don't want the DVD player to think that it is a DVD, but instead recognize that it is an SVCD, just on something other than a CD-R.

Anyone try this? By my calculations, a 4.7gig DVD-R could hold 3 full SVCD movies (if those movies would have fit on 2 CD-Rs).

    not likely possible because
    1. you cant burn in vcd/svcd mode on a dvdr.
    2. i tried to put a vcd layout burned in normal iso/udf mode on a dvd+rw and my pioneer dv-444 just says, loading dvd...cannot not be played. I also tried with mp3 that the player supports on cd-r/w and it also says loading dvd...cannot be played. so I think that the player first check what format, if dvd then it plays it as dvd-video and if cd-r/w check if mp3 or audio or vcd/svcd. maybe it would work on some players with modified firmware.

  3. I thought I heard some dvd players can read .wma files. Maybe the vcd can be converted to Windows media?

  4. Thanks for the reply. This is a major bummer. It would have been nice to be able to have 3 SVCD movies on a single DVD-r if the player would recognize it.

  5. You could still fit multiple movies on a single DVD-R if you author it as a regular DVD-Video but with several movies at lower resolution and bitrate.
DVD Video format supports mpeg-1 at 352x240 (1.8Mb/s max) and mpeg-2 at 352x480 in addition to the normal DVD 720x480 mpeg-2. So you could fit multiple movies on one DVD with either SVCD or VCD quality.
If you want to convert existing SVCD to DVD you would probably have to re-encode since 480x480 mpeg-2 is not a DVD supported resolution.
