I am looking to archive a 100-200 hours of family memoribilia. I am planning to archive the video onto a Lacie as well as backing it all up on DVD's. I am using Final Cut Pro 3. Optimally, I would like to capture the video at a compression setting that will allow me to get a 2 hour VHS onto a single DVD without compromising the video too much - which I reallize is relative to the individual. A DVR recorder seems to convert TV video without compromising the quality at all. But a VOB file won't play on a computer. Is is possible to get the same results with Final Cut.

VOB files will play on a computer, even a Mac What you need to find is some Mac software that will allow you to demux the video and audio streams from the DVD so you can edit them further in Final Cut Pro. You can start your search here -> https://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=15#15 AviDemux might be a start.

That said, unless the edits you are making are simple cuts, I would be capturing directly to the PC first, making whatever edits and adjustments are necessary, then outputting in two formats - one for archiving and one for DVD. The reason being, mpeg doesn't like repeated encoding. If you edit mpeg and make more than just I-frame simple cuts, re-encoding must occur, and quality can drop quickly.
