    Hi!
I've bought a new computer and it has a strange problem that I have never seen before.
Sometimes when I play a video file, the video is not shown but it is played with only audio.
When this error happens, all type of videos (avi, mpg, dat ,...) can not be shown and all type of players (winamp, xing, media player, jet audio, ...) can not show the video.
This error is fixed with a restart but it happens again in another time.
Of course it is not related to lack of a codec because all file types are the same.By the way windows media player don't detect any video error. (It seems that the video is playing but I can't see it). Also the video resolution is recognized by the player while playing ( It means that video is playing but I can't see it!).
I installed a different version of windows xp but the error remained.
I also reinstalled the video-card driver.

Is it from a software? or my graphic card? or even my monitor!!?
    Please help me.

It didn't work like other players.

I said that when error happens, all type of video files with all types of players can not be played.(only their audio is played) while player detects no error and recognizes the video resolution.
As I said, the error is fixed with restart.

Does anyone know the cause of the problem?
Is it a software or a hardware error?

  4. Go to your graphics card's configuration applet and fiddle with the Overlay settings.

what you describing seems like very common problem like when i do fresh install of windows 2000... (i.e. powerdvd6 won't have picture due to old directx on windows)

update directx to latest version 9.0c
update your graphic crad's drivers to latest version
    and it should be fine
run dxdiag and see is everything supported - most important is DirectDraw Acceleration

    I found when error happens:
"Only after I Hibernate my computer".
It is fixed by a restart (or even a standby !!).

Now I am nearly sure it is because of an incompatibility of my graphic card (Geforce 5200) with window xp.

I've installed the newest version of directx and card driver.
I've also checked the settings in Dxdiag and graphic card configurations.
As I say i've installed two version s of win xp.
But the error is still with me!

    Can anyone suggest anything?

well you have problem with APM/ACPI/.../ power management in general.
Could be settings in the BIOS (like caching video rom - disable it and see will it help, if not go back to BIOS and reenable it back), could be many things.
Also Windoze sometimes doesn't detect APM/ACPI properly when installed (is it fresh WinXP installation? This could be it) Try in such case reinstalling the power management driver/ force redetecting it.
Right-click on My Computer, select Manage, select Device Manager.
See what you have under Computer - i.e. Standard PC, or ACPI Uniprocessor PC, etc. (I don't know which is apropiate for your type of motherboard, so you gotta know few things about your machine). You can either manually change the driver there, or you can just remove it and restart computer (it will redetect and reinstall 'drivers' after reboot).
    There could many reasons.
    Have you try googling it?
It could be just your motherboard (if its older model) that doesn't support some power management functions (i.e. I have older laptop with APM1.0 and I always get problem when booting it back from hibernation - because its BIOS is searching for memory dump in the files that don't exist since I'm using Windows 2000 on it, while Win98 used to create viderom.bin etc files upon hibernation)

    Good luck.
