I want to overlay a still image of a person on a background in Vegas.

But I want just the outline of the person. Cookie cutter won't do it for me because it has basic shapes like ovals, circle, square etc.
I want to know if I can just have the outline and the rest of the image transparent? Is this possible?

    Thanks,

    ps: I have Vegas 6.0

You could always try the Bezier option for making a mask or take the still use an eraser in Photoshop or similar program, delete the parts of the picture you do not need fill it with a colour which is not in the part of the picture you wish to keep and then use the Chroma Key video FX.

    Dont know vegas ...

But try converting the image to png format first ...
Depending on paint program you use ... I prefer the gimp .
Paint eveything in picture you dont want black ... gimp has good "sellecting" tool's .
Select black area , add to alpha chanel , save as png format ... default's used when saving in gimp .

Alpha chanel , depending on colour used is masking ... ie , black is completely transparent .

When used in wax2 , and in avisynth scripting .. it is completely transparent ... in vegas , it could be anything else .

Checkout wax2 , and the frameserver ... I think it support's vegas ... dont know which way though .

    ----------------------------------

I'll be messing with the ulead video part to see what is what ...

You can also use Photoshop. Simply create a selection of the image you want and then copy (Ctrl-C). Then create (Ctrl-N) a new image the size of your video frame (e.g. 720x480) with a transparent background. Then paste (Ctrl-V) your copied image onto the newly created image. This will create a new layer. Once satisfied with your placement, then simply save as a PSD file. Import directly into Vegas. Hope this helps.
