XMP – Metadata related question

Hi,

I am working on pdf XMP UUID metadata values; there are two types of UUIDs

1.DocumentId: UUID : - The common identifier for all versions and renditions of a document)
2.InstanceId: UUID: - An identifier for a specific incarnation of a document, updated each time a file is saved.
ØDocumentId will never change even you make below changes like below
1.If we make any changes in ‘application metadata’ or
2.Created a new copy using ‘Save AS…’ option.
3.Make a forensic copy etc.
ØInstanceId will change, if we make any above changes except forensic copy.
But we observed for some documents this InstanceId id has not been changed even though application metadata values are different. Could you please let me know why this value was not changed? Is there a way to retain this InstanceId constant through the entire copied/modified documents?

I would greatly appreciate if members can assist me with the anomalies that I am noticing in InstanceID and DocumentID within XMP fields within Acrobat (pdf) files.

I have some pdf files, copies of which were sent to different offices. I am under the impression, that whenever pdf file’s metadata changes such as Author, Create date, and Modified date, the file’s InstanceID changes as well but the documentID remains the same. However, these files that I received, whose originals I have in our possession, I noticed that the InstanceID has not changed, even though the Author, Create Date and Modified date was changed. I suspect that a tool/application was used to alter the metadata, but, my belief was that InstanceID will always change whenever metadata is modified.

Do I have an incorrect understanding of the InstanceID? Can some of you experts, point me to resources that I can utilize to educate ourselves or assist me in understanding the exact functionality and purpose of InstanceID.

Any and all assistance is highly appreciated.
