Holy cow! Its been at least 1-2 hours now and its still not complete. I'd say its about halfway through... Is this normal? I'm trying to back up Kingdom of Heaven Disc 1. DVD Decrypter used to take about 30-40 minutes. The entire DVDShrink process used to take about 1-2 hours. CloneDVD2 takes about 1-2 hours as well. Do I need to get a new DVD-ROM drive to use DVDFab?

Since DVDFab Decrypter (and DVD Decrypter) only rip, and really don't 'Backup', I assume that you mean "how long does it take to rip a disk".
For me it's generally 10-15 minutes for most disks with either DVDDecrypter or DVDFabDecrypter. 30-40 minutes to rip is too long, 1-2 hours and there's a problem.
I'd suggest first checking that your drives are in DMA mode and not PIO. That's the most likely cause of slow ripping time. -
if a certain disk is going a lot slower than normal, maybe the disc needs to be cleaned? just a thought.

use dvdfab decrypter..for new discs like kingdom of heaven, dvddecrypter isnt the best.
but the time might be due to your pc..longest rip has taken me about 12 minutes.
or like BobK says, check the drives performance.LifeStudies 1.01 - The Angle Of The Dangle Is Indirectly Proportionate To The Heat Of The Beat,Provided The Mass Of The Ass Is Constant. -
DVD Fab Decrypter normally is slower than other ripping software, but it is capable of copying damaged disks where others cannot. It skips errors, etc., but takes a long time before it does identify and skip them. I do not know the condition of your disk that you are trying to copy, but usually DVD FAb Decrypter takes a long time when it is trying to copy a damaged disk.

Your drive may have a rip lock on the hardware. This will slow down the ripping speed to maximum set by the drive.

Other things to look at
1. Is your drive running in PIO mode ? If so, it will be very slow. Search for Ultra DMA or PIO mode in the forums to find solutions to this problem. Note : A drive can slip back to PIO mode after encountering a certain threshhold of errors when reading - this is a windows failsafe, and can happen at any time.
2. Is your drive rip-locked ? Most drives are locked to a slow read speed for DVDs (around 2x) out of the box. A firmware update will remove this restriction.
If the disk is clean, I will usually get a DL 7 - 8GB rip is around 8 minutes using Decrypter. I haven't used DVD Fab Decrypter much as I have anyDVD, so I don't know if it simply processes slower anyway.Read my blog here.

I find DVD Fab Decrypter very useful for its ability to skip errors but a note of caution. Depending on where the error(s) happen to be that it skips, the resulting copy can sometimes be structurally flawed so that it can't be used. That isn't say DVD Fab Decrypter is bad. This is a very useful feature. Just keep in mind that sometimes you will have more "fixing" to do after you make a copy. Some errors are worse than others. If you just miss a sliver of video for a second, that's one thing. But if an IFO file is waxed, you may have to rename your BUP file, (which is a backup of the IFO file) to IFO. In a rare case, you may need to take the VOB files and redo the movie without the original menu and the extras.Originally Posted by ebenton

I find fab extremely useful for reading discs that are badly scratched. Sometimes the data skipped causes a file to become unusable. I usually check the data to make sure all files are fine. Those that aren't I will attempt to manually drag and drop the file. Fab has helped me a number of times to recover data from DVD-RW discs with important data on them. For a DVD-R it usually takes about 5 minutes, a DVD+R takes about an extra minute. RWs are the same. For dual layer both -r and +R take about 15 minutes or so with no significant difference between them.Originally Posted by SCDVD
