Cleaning the DVD Burner

What the best recommended method on cleaning a DVD-Burner? I smoke around my PC (yeah I know, I know.... ) and I was thinking that maybe I should do something to give it some proper care and maintenance..Any ideas?

The most effective and the most evasive method I've found is to crack the burner open and clean the laser lens directly with some windex and cotton swab. I've done this to a few burners without ruining them, but if your hesitant you may want to try less evasive methods that others may suggest. But if you've tried everything else and are about to toss the burner, this method can be used as a last resort.
