  1. I have access to a DVD-R drive at work and am confused as to what can be done with the discs so my DVD player can read them.
I saw in another post that someone was able to burn VCD format onto a DVD-R disc and play it in his DVD player. Is this true? Do I still only have 80mins or will my DVD player "see" it all? And what about DVD-Video how does that work? Whats the bitrates and all that?

  2. "VCD format onto a DVD-R disc and play it in his DVD player."

I am of the belief this was a rare case, a la miniDVDs, but that most players will not play VCD format from a DVD-R. First you need to make SURE you DVD player even supports DVD-R. Not all do. As far as have to make one, check the how to sections to your left, or over at doom9.net.

DVD supports mpeg1 at 352x240 upto 1856 kbit/s. All gop's must have a sequence header, it must be encoded to constraint parameters (vbv buffer of 40 in TMPG), audio 48khz pcm, or 48khz ac3.

You can fit ~5.5 hours of mpeg1 on one DVD-R.

Yes but this is different than authoring a DVD-R in VCD format...yes, you can author the above type of mpeg in DVD format, but authoring in vcd format yeilds a high probabilty of incompability (I sound like Don king there).

  5. It is probably impossible to author a VCD onto DVD-R media.

However, you can use VCD standard MPEG files to author a DVD on DVD-R media.

As disturbed1 stated before, there are some constraints, but these "should" be already met if your MPEGs are VCD compliant... except for audio. You will have to resample your audio to 48 kHz before authoring the DVD (unless your authoring proggie can do it for you of course).

  6. So it is possible to have VCD mpegs on DVD-R, giving enough space to put multiple movies onto one DVD-R disc. Then in this case do I use my DVD authoring software as I would for DVD video and just use the mpeg1 files or is it impossible to have menus and chapters when using mpeg1 on DVD-R?

    Correct

" is it impossible to have menus and chapters when using mpeg1 on DVD-R?"

Incorrect, you CAN make menus & such if you DVD authoring supports this which any good one should.
