I'm new to converting .ts streams, and just did an AVISynth/VirtualDub conversion using H.264 codec, since I seemed to get the best picture at 5000 average bitrate, converting from 1080i to 1280x720p for storage on my home server. Now I'm trying to mux back the AC3 file using Nandub and it's telling me I need a VfW H.264 codec in order to load the video file in Nandub.

Am I an idiot? Is there no VfW for H.264? Can't seem to find anything useful on Google. Is there a different way to mux these two together?

Thanks for any help. I'd like to get this down to a regular process so I can save all my favorite movies from alt.binaries.hdtv at about 1/2 to 1/3 their normal bitrate.

So you are using x264 VfW? H.264 isn't exactly descriptive as I don't think x264 is the only VfW H.264 codec.

Anyway, x264 doesn't include a decoder. You need to have ffdshow installed, also make sure that it is enabled for AVC decoding in the VfW decoder tab.

AVIMuxGUI or VirtualDubMod should be able to mux fine without the need for any decoder installed.

One thing though. You might want to consider using the x264 commandline encoder instead of the VfW. Accepts AVISynth scripts and can output directly to mp4, mkv or raw .246.
