Note: Although I use OS X, I've been using XP/SP2 emulated to help out with this, though I haven't gotten very far.

I've extracted a 5.1 AAC audio file from a mkv in the hopes of getting it to AC3 for use with my standalone DVD player.

I dropped the file onto aacDECdrop to get a 5.1 WAV file.

ffmpegX won't convert the file to AC3. It completes the encode instantly with an error. BeLight, a GUI for BeSweet, completes the encode instantly and produces an EMPTY (0 kb) .ac3 audio file with no errors.

I also tried using QuickTime 7 to convert the AAC to a 5.1 AIFF file, but no software I've found can convert a 5.1 AIFF to AC3 either.

I'm stumped and about ready to give up and convert the file to stereo MP3 just so I can go ahead and watch the video.
    My A/V hardware: Sony 30" KV-30HS420, Philips DVP642/37, Logitech Z-5500 Digital 5.1, Comcast/Motorola DCT6200, PS2 SCPH-30001 (and it still works!)

Was it he-aac or lc-aac? Because does QT support he? At least I think that the windows versions of 7 still don't support it. Other apps may also have similar issues even though they support he aac since there is no header.

Did you try foobar2k like I suggested earlier?
