  1. Is there anyway to form 4x DVD-r/+r media to burn at 8x?

I have a Lite-on 1873S 16x burner. Is there any burning software that will allow me to burn a DVD idenitified as 4x burn at 8x?

I have heard that sometimes this is possible. That you just have to try and see if it will work.

It's not your burning software causing the problem ... ( not on it's own, anyway ) ....

    No.

You need to cast aside that stock-standard firmware your burner has that contains things such as rip-locked speed and region change restrictions and flash it to a hacked firmware. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php may just have the firmware for your burner. Be warned that your warranty isn't worth jack if you do this.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. if you flash the original firmware to a hacked firmware can you clear that and go back to the original firmware?

I went to that hack site and they only have region free hack firmware. No rip-locked speed firmware.

So long as you can get the original firmware from somewhere, or find a firmware backup utility to take a copy of the original firmware before you flash it.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Just because your burner will burn FAST, doesn't mean you should make it burn FAST.

Realize that the faster the burn the shallower or 'softer' the physical changes burned into the media, so if you are burning something that you want to last 100 years (yes I'm exagerating) use the slowest speed possible. Tests confirm this!

    I know. I know.

If you want faster burns, buy faster media and a faster drives. Speed isn't anything. What you propose with ruin the media nd make coasters. Overburning (speed) is stupid.

Overspeeding YUDEN000T02 (on drives that natively support it) works very well.

  8. You will need to use Omnipatcher to modify your firmware. With some media, simply enabling the higher speed is sufficient, with others, you will need to also swap writing strategies to be successful. It's a concept that generally works better with higher quality media (RICOHJPN & YUDEN).

All in all its a risky proposition. I'd recommend using the EEPROM utility to backup your EEPROM beforehand.

Yeah, there are a few media that were really made for faster speeds but for some reason ended up rated slower. This is usually what happens when media comes out faster than new drives.

    MKM +DL media (write 4-6x) and YUDENT0002 DVD+R 8x (writes 12x), for example

I have some Taiyo disks that were advertised as 4X, but will burn at 8X in my LG GSA-4120b and burn at 12X in my Pioneer 109.
I have some 16X Verbatim disks that will burn at 16X in my Pioneer, but only burn at 4X in my LG.
A lot depends on your firmware.

TYG02 media, rated at 8x, sometimes sold as 4x, can burn 12x just fine.

I have memorex media(dvd-r) labeled as 4x. These have never been burnt as 4x only 8x and now 16x. I've never had any problems with burning using an I/O Magic(8x Max) or Sony burner(16x Max). No hacked firmware. Just insert disc and select max burn speed. Some people have issues with higher burning speeds even with media rated for those speeds. I suspect they have other issues related to their system config(hardware or software) that is causing those problems.

ProdiscSxxx, I forget the numbers. I bought a few cases of these on sale at Staples quite some time ago. They work excellent. They were in spindles of 50.

I did my first DVD burn last night on my 109 using DVD shrink on TDK 8x +R media and it automatically burned at 12x.

With the exception of special things where permance is a priority, should I just let the software burn at whatever speed it selects?

No, I would not. Select the speed you want.
In most cases, you want the rated speed "8x"
    I think YUDENT002 is only one I'd do 12x.

  17. I have actually had good luck with ProDisc 8x DVD-R printables. I'm able to burn them at 12X on my NEC-3520. I have done about 100 that way, all had good scans and played flawlessly on my standalone and my laptop dvd-rom. A lot of people have gotten bad batches of prodiscs, myself included. However, it's only been about 20 out of 400 discs.
