  2. VCD = MPEG1 & SVCD = MPEG2
    At the same bitrate and resolution MPEG1 looks the same as MPEG2 (video quaility wise). MPEG2 is superior to MPEG1 because it supports things that MPEG1 does not: interlaced source, multiple angles, multple audio files, selectable subtitles, etc.

    DivX = MPEG4
    MUCH better compression. But can only play on PC. If you only plan to watch stuff on your PC than DivX is the way to go. The increased compression means smaller files, and you can use lower bitrates to get really good quaility.

    If you want to play your encodes on your stand alone DVD player, than you've got to go w/ x(S)VCD. With xVCD being slightly more supported and than (x)SVCD.

  3. As what Vejita-sama said!

    DivX and SVCD cannot be directly compared as they are used for different things. It's like comparing apples to oranges.

    A well encoded DivX movie can have better video and audio quality than a SVCD at a smaller filesize. However, as you can't play DivX discs on a stand-alone player + TV + sound system, it probably doesn't have the same "entertainment" value as a SVCD.

    SVCDs can also have higher authored content compared to a DivX disc (e.g., menus, chapters, etc).

    Regards.
