Aspect ratio problems

A couple of years ago, I converted some dv to mpeg and saved it on cd rom. It played fine back then. Now I go to review two years later and the video plays fine, but is elonggated or what I would call backwards aspect ratio? Between media player, real player and so on, I cannot find a player that allows me to control the aspect ratio. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do?
