  1. I have just installed a second hard drive to my PC. I have created a number of .avi files on the second drive, which during playback using Windows Media player or Real Player the video and sound are extremely choppy. Any ideas how to fix the issue, am I mssing something simple ?

My first suggestion is to ensure that you have DMA enabled on the new drive:
Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers >Primary(Secondary) IDE Channels >Properties> Advanced Settings.
    You can't fool me, I'm a moron!

  5. I had that problem and it was because the audio was uncompressed so i compressed to mp3 and that fixed it.

  6. Thanks for your help. Both drives DMA enables. Do not know how to compress audio on the .avi files. Any help gratefully received.

    Kind regards,
    Steve.

  7. load your video in virtualdub click audio > check Full processing mode > click audio again > click compression and choose something from the list i use mpeg 3 and make sure video > direct stream is checked then save the avi

  8. This shouldnt really be happening
must be some crap/damaged hardware or a missing driver
as video playback along an ide cable should never be choppy

are you running some other program at the same time
ie CPU is maxed out on another process which results in messed up video playback

common programs for maxing the cpu are
    Winrar
bit torrent if not properly set up (Azureus)
    video encoders
    audio encoders
    a frozen program
    .....

If so close whatever is hogging the CPU

    If not
try the 2nd hard drive on a different ide channel to the 1st hard drive

IDE1 just has hard drive with Windows on
IDE2 has optical drive (cdrw/dvd etc) and second hard drive

If you're still having problems, you might try running the Windows defrag tool. Let it analyze your drive then look at the report to see which files (if any) are fragmented.

To access the tool, open the My Computer folder, click on the appropriate drive icon, click on "Properties" from the popup menu and select the "Tools" tab.
