I have an avi. movie file and the srt. subtitle file for it. Is there any way, to join these files to burn into a DVD-RW? I read the guides, but most of the programs suggested to do the task are out of date or they can't be downloaded. It must be a SIMPLE way to do it!!!. Please advice. Thank you!

    Convert to dvd?
Then use diko, thefilmmachine,avi2dvd or dvd2svcd and you will get a dvd with switchable subs.

AVIMuxGUI, mux srt into avi and then burn as data to the DVD-RW. That is if you goal is only to join the files and burn as stated.

celtic, everything is so complicated or I'm a ignorant idiot (big chance for the second choice!!!). I downloaded AVIMuxGUI to mux srt into avi. I load the subtitle file, click START and nothing happens!!! What the hell am I missing?. I'm so f....frustrated!!! I'm trying hard to learn how to deal with these video files, edit, joint, burn, etc. but every task is a tremendous problem! Maybe you're more patience than me and can throw some more helpful information, but I'll understand if you give up on me.

  7. DVDSANTA is said to do subtitles. If you read the reviews here someone mentions how they did it.
Fabulous program if you want burned in subtitles. Make sure its a srt file, the same name as the movie and in the same folder. DVDSanta will automatically make a file with the subtitles.
Very useful as well if you have a movie split over two avi files. Drag and drop and press a button and finished. It even keeps 5.1 surround sound intact. Not really fast but the quality is very good if not excellent.

You may be able to skip over the syncronizing part and follow the rest of the guide.

Very simple and works - thanks celtic_druid.
But it works only on a few PC players.
I presume these are, so called, soft encoded subtitles, or?

celtic, (by the way...Happy St.Patrick!!!), please help me to convert srt. to avi. as per your suggestion: " AVIMuxGUI, mux srt into avi and then burn as data to the DVD-RW"....somehow I'm missing some steps. Unfortunally I'm one of those computer illiterate that need to be guided like a blind person across a busy intersection. Thank you again!

    Hi,
Just download BSPlayer and name your SRT file the same as the VIDEO file and place it in the same folder as the video file and play the movie. It will pick up subs by itself. If that does not work, use VobSub to encode your SRT file to SUB file and than try the same method.

VirtualDubMod is one of the best. Can you explain what means "It doesn't work"
About the avimuxgui read a bit here https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=239995 and make your conclusions if you can. It is time to think a bit and to use so called common sense.

Amond, hey pal...take it easy!!! I'm in this forum asking for help with a subject that I'm not familiar with, (like most people do when they need assistance). I did explain my limited knowledge in my previous posting and I feel that instead of sarcastic remarks about common sense, you could have spend your precious time typing some helpful hints. If you are not ready to be patience with me or any other members asking for help, then shut you mouth and join one of those arrogant and eccentric geniuses forums where you don't have to deal with ignorants like me.

  19. Oops I didn't want to be arrogant - sorry that you take it so. I think my remarks are overall helpful even these with common sense . But I think really the link I gave you is very helpful - at one of the images in the guide I have seen "generate data source" - this probably is what the people that try to help are talking about. I can also help you if you answer the question what means "It doesn't work" - maybe you computer crash, I don't know as you didn't say.
Well, instead this you take it like I want to insult you - this is not true, you are wrong.

OK Abond, let's make some peace now....we have enough animosity, fighting and separation in today's world! Sorry if I took your comments the wrong way, but they were directed to ME and not someone else. I understand now you didn't mean to offend me....so let's shake imaginary hands and let's cheer with a good glass of Cabernet Souvignon!! By the way, when I try to use Virtualdub to join the subs with the video I can't find how to load the subtitle file. That's what I meant with "not working".
I was able to load only the video file into AviMux GUI. It can't accept my sub. extension so that project is over. Trust me Abond, I' m thinking AND using common sense but nothing seems to work. All I need is to join my avi. file with my srt. subtitle and create a file that I can burn into a DVD-RW (I didn't know what I was getting into ) but since I've never done this before, I really need some specific instructions (step by step ). If you feel like helping me, I will appreciate but again, I will also understand your frustration......PEACE!!

  21. Well,OK. I will try to give you step by step, but I know how to do it with VirtualDubMod.
    1. Start VirtualDubMod. Click File->Open video file. Open the avi.
    2. Click Streams->Stream list. New window will open where you can see the audio stream of the avi. Right click on the audio stream->select DirectStreamCopy.
    3. The same window right hand there are diferent buttons, the second from the top is "Add". Click it. From dropdown menu for the file type select SRT file(*.srt). Browse to the .srt file and open it -> it will appear in the stream list. Click OK.
    4. Click Video->select Directstreamcopy.
    5. Click File->Save as.... Give a name to the file (different from the source file). Click Save.
    6. Wait. . Done.
    BTW, I prefer Merlot.

OK Abond, I did EXACTLY what you've asked me. I loaded the avi. file, the audio and the sub file. I created a new file. I opened it with Media Classic Player and believe it or not, THERE IS NOT ANY F....SUBTITLE!!! Man, I'm going nuts!!! Am I missing any step AFTER the file was created? I did not see any action when the dub was in progress (I have two black blank screens, although I see a progress in the Virtual Dub Status). Do I need to do something previous to burn file into DVD-RW? I know I'm almost there, but it's so f...frustrating that by now I'm ready to get drunk with either CS or Merlot

  23. Go there and download VSFilter:http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84359&release_id=308961
Place it somewhere in the folder where is mpclassic. Start mpclassic. Click View->Options. In the new window look where is written Filters in the window at left. If it is with [+] and not extended click it to extend - there is option override. Click it. At right side click Add filter. Down left click Browse - and open VSfilter.dll. Now in the window you have DirectVobsub and directvobsub (autoloading version) Double click on directvobsub (autoloading version) and select the font you like under text settings(General tab). Other defaults are OK. Click Apply or whatever is there (I have german version of Windows and here is Übernehmen) and OK. Again OK.
Open the avi file in mpclassic. Right click on the screen, move the mouse to Filters and then to DirectVobSub (autoloading version) - make sure Show subtitle is marked. Enjoy!
Ah, I see the VSfilter is available at this site!

Media Player Classic basically has directvobsub built in. It an VSFilter share a lot of the same code and libs.
    Quote Quote
  25. Probably yes, but I am realy not able to see the subtitles without direct vobsub assistance.

You need to have the output set to VMR7/9.

  27. Yes, that was. Well the options are greyed out and I hate VMR7/9

Abond, NO SUBTITLES YET...!! I downloaded the VSFilter....I load the avi.file that I finished to dub with the srt. file and when I right click on the screen to Filters, there is no DirectVobSub and no subtitles when I play the movie.....I'm sure there is a little step that I'm missing. Again...when I dub the avi. with the srt. and I get those two black screens.....am I supossed to see any progress or changes ON either one of the screens or any place else on the display? Also, when I download the VSFilter, I got two different files from the site you've posted: Release and Release Unicode. Which one should I use? ALMOST THERE!!!
    Quote Quote
  29. Release Unicode. At least this is what I am using. BTW I repeat all steps that I suggested to you and I see the subtitles nicely.
Go again to AddFilters screen and look if the small boxes left fron the DVobSub filters are checked.
