I need to be able to delete audio from a section of a vcd and then dub in lecture. What suggestions do you have for a program to do this? Will VCDeasy do it? The freeware version or the paid version? Also will VCDeasy allow me to do titles and menus?

    Thanks in advance.

No. You need to edit the audio in audio software. An NLE would be best, because then you could monitor the video as well. Then encode the new audio and make new VCD.

Thanks! Now we are cooking with gas...now I need to know a couple of things. I am just getting familiar with video terminology and find the audio to be yet another kind of Greek...if I start with a DV cam and use windv to transfer it to my computer, what format is the sound in at that point? is it an integral part of the file, i.e. one file, needing to be split out, or are there two files contained on the tape? What is that name? and when a VCD or SVCD is burned what is the ultimate format of audio, i.e. the name (type) of the file? I think if I know these things I can proceed.

  9. I have not used WinDV but IMO, WinDV can capture both type 1 & 2 AVIs as called by Microsoft. In both cases the audio will be PCM type.

If you create a "standard compliant" VCD/SVCD, in both cases the audio is encoded as MPEG-1 Layer 2 (MP2) at a sample rate of 44100 and bitrate of 224 Kbps.

Why don't you demultiplex the VCD DAT file into separate audio and video files and just remux the new audio with the video file and burn a new VCD? The other suggestions are too complicated and totally unnecessary.

Actually, Sanjay's response is not totally correct for SVCD. See https://www.videohelp.com/svcd for the audio specs for SVCD. He's right about VCD. This type of audio is OK for SVCD too, but the format supports other bit rates as well.
