Hey folks,
I'm having a real hard time trying to come up with decent settings in TMPGenc to generate MPEG2 files for use on SVCDs. I'm using Premiere on the Mac to import my DV footage (NTSC) from my camcorder. I edit the footage and produce a final movie which I then export. This creates a Quicktime DV file. I then move that file over to my Virtual PC drive and encode it with TMPG. I've tried the standard SVCD template, but I really didn't care for the results. I've tweaked a lot of the settings, but honestly, I don't know what I'm doing. The quality of the output I'm getting has been good in terms of motion, but the color accuracy and the sharpness are average, at best. I compare this to the same file encoded with Cleaner 5 on the Mac. When I use Cleaner the color and the sharpness are excellent, however, the motion is somewhat stuttered or choppy. It is definately not as smooth as the file produced with TMPG.
So I'm hoping that someone can tell what settings they've used in TMPG to produce good looking video.
Thanks,
Chris

Chris, check out the templates under tools on the left hand brown index. Unzip them to your templates folder in TMPG where ever that may be on your harddrive and load them as normal within TMPG. Good Luck,
Dave

Dave,
Thanks, but there's only one SVCD template on that list and it doesn't work. TMPGenc reports an error about exceeding 1 line, or something like that when you try to load it. But that's all that's there.

Chris,
I'm doing some capturing and rendering on my DV videos myself. After I cap the video into Premeire, I save it as a raw AVI file using the MS DV codec. I'm running Win2000. I dropped no frames.
I had problems with interlacing when I tried a test clip at 29.97fps, using the standard SVCD template. So, I then tried the SAME test clip, but rendered at 23.97fps, using the standard svcd template with Inversed Telecine selected and no other options. The results were very impressive.
Try it. -
Hi,
OK, just to be sure that I understand. When you export your timeline from Premiere, your settings for the exported file have a framerate of 23.97? Then you encode that file in TMPG with the Inverse Telecine option?
Also, what made you believe that you had interlacing problems with the original method? What were the indications?
Thanks,
Chris

Using Premiere v6 and Tmpgenc v2.01.
When I export the movie from Premeire, it is in the same frame rate I captured at, 29.97 NTSC.
I then encode the exported file in Tmpgenc using the SVCD Film (NTSC) template which has a frame rate of 23.97. I use these options :
On the VIDEO tab :
I used the highest quality setting for the motion search percision and constant quality for the rate control mode.
On the ADVANCED tab :
I checked/selected the INVERSE TELECINE box.
That's all I changed for the test render.
--------------------------
When I export from Premeire, I still have a DV 1 AVI. You said that you save as Quicktime. I don't know if that will effect the settings. I mention this because under the ADVANCED tab you always have to reset the correct settings for in the VIDEO SOURCE SETTINGS box.
---------------------------
As far as the interlacing. When I burned my test clip to CD (the one that was done at 29.97) and played it, whenever there was a lot of motion there were a bunch of horizontal lines popping up. The one I did at 23.97 was flawless.
There's a whole other set of settings you'll have to play with under the rate control mode, so expect lots of trial and error.
I used a 10 minute test clip. Let know if it's still unclear.
