  1. Hi, I am going to buy a DVD burner for my in the new year so I can burn my own DVD's with DV material and play them on a set top player.

    I own a Panasonic A360 and a Philips 711.

My dillema is which standard should I go for.

Some sites say that the Panasonic A360 will play DVD+RW and some say it will not, this also applies to DVD-R. I also read that the Panasonic A360 will play DVD+RW only if recorded on the Philips set top recorder when recorded using a special remote key.

HP mention a lot of Philips set top players in there compatibility list but not the 711. It is also unclear if the 711 will play DVD-R disks for the same reasons.

It looks to me like DVD-R is the most compatible but for various reasons I would prefer to go the DVD+RW route.

Does anybody have experience with playing home made DVD's on one of these players? Also has anybody put a DVD burner into a IDE --> Firewire case and got it to work.

    All the best,

    itsme

  2. Hi !

I think it is by far not clear which standard will
survive this "war". I suppose it's similar to
VHS and Video2000 many years ago. But I do prefer
    the DVD+R/RW format.

    Have a look here:
    http://www.dvdplusrw.org/

Hope this helps a little bit!
    Med.

  4. I agree when it comes to the vhs/betamax/v2000 type "war" that is going on, it is a bit unclear which one will win. My main concern at the moment is will one (or both) of my player(s) actually play one of the formats.

It does look like the DVD+RW is in the lead as far PC drives go as since there are already about 8 manufacturers that are making DVD+RW drives.

Having said that its not important to me which format wins. It is important which format will play in my current players.

I already looked at the dvdplusrw site, one of my concerns is that the site states:

"For the following DVD-Video players, the special recording setting offered by the DVDR1000 and DVDR1500 needs to be applied to a disc before it can be used. This special mode is only available on these Philips DVD+RW video recorders. In all other occasions you may consider these players to be incompatible with DVD+RW discs."

Is it possible to simulate this "special recording setting" on a PC drive.
This special setting is probably just setting a bit on the disk telling the player that it is dealing with a single layer disk although it looks like a dual layer disk.
I know that it is possible, but do software developers support this in there authoring software?
