This may be a dumb question but...
Is ffmpegx faster than Toast at encoding video? I would think yes right?

In my experience, encoding to mpeg2 and ac3:
If using ffmpeg to decode and encode, FFMPEGX is far faster. Twice as fast about.
Encoding with ffmpeg and decoding with Quicktime is a bit slower than Toast, but very close and of higher quality in my opinion.
Otherwise, Toast is faster and probably of slightly higher quality for mpeg2 than mpeg2enc, no matter the decoder. Although mpeg2enc does have it's advantages such as being truly capable of constant bit rate and it offers the mplayer decoder.
