Philips machines(most of them) burn exactly what the input signal is....so if you input a true NTSC signal....it will record it as long as there is a "virgin" disc in the machine.
You cannot choose which format you wish to record to(it will not convert PAL to NTSC).

If you are in a PAL country....it may be a bit difficult(a little bit) finding a DVD player that will output a "true" NTSC signal.
99% of the DVD players automatically play NTSC discs with ease...BUT....it is outputting a "quasi" or fake signal to fool the TV.
My Philips will not record a quasi signal....only a true signal....but it will record both NTSC and PAL.
I have a DVDR985 NTSC model here in Europe...which we all know is PAL-Land.....and I can make any disc I want IF the signal is "true" and not a quasi one.

  5. Thanks for your advices,
i think mine model can burn ntsc dvd's too but i don't know how.
Can you tell me please what you doing before burn ntsc ?
I mean any specific configuration in options.. ?
Your philips is region free(unlocked) ? or region 1,2 ???
And why the philips formatting dvd's always PAL ?
How can i format an empty dvd NTSC ?

There is no special configuration for recording in either format. If the incoming signal to a brand new disc is NTSC....that is what is recorded.
The old(er) 880 is almost a duplicate of my 985. The only thing different is the tuner portion. I cannot record via the antenna with my NTSC model....but it will record with any of the other inputs.
If you manage to get a true NTSC signal to come out of your DVD player....then into your DVD Recorder with a brand new disc....the result will be NTSC.
I know...it is a bit confusing but...not really once you grasp what you need to do.....and that is get your DVD player to output a TRUE NTSC signal from the NTSC DVD you are playing in it.
I have 1 PAL/NTSC "compatible" DVD player that outputs a Quasi signal....and I have one DVD player that will output either signal I want with the press of one button on the remote....the famous N/P button....
The problem is NOT your recorder....the problem is your signal.
