dvd player doesnt read/write

my dvd writer doesnt read or write the cd. my computer detects it, but just doesnt read or write anyone know whats the problem?

What would help:
The model of the DVD writer
The type of CD you're putting in (music/data/vcd etc)

I have same problem and no solution but some clues.

Compaq Presario 2.5 Celeron
winxp home pre-installed
Some sp2 installed - even through aupdates turned off
Nec nd 1300a burner.
Burning software RecordNow - preinstalled Nero 6x

I know the drive is still good and fully functional as it will allow boot from cd
If I boot to recovery partion it will burn a set of recovery discs.
Also functions when boot from "livecd"

I have another ext. dvd burner that I use for cd when needed. Too lazy to start over as do not have os install disc, just recovery set that all kinds of unwanted trial stuff, etc.

Solution would be nice, but info posted to help orig poster

Win Xp pro p4 2.4 ghz .i have a sony DRU-710A. 16x dvd+R. it can also burn double layer. i was using nero express and trying to make a data cd. I tried alcohol 120 and it still didnt read too. i was putting a dvd-r. I tried putting a cd-r too but that still doesnt work. My burner supports dvd+R and dvd-r.
