Hi there,
I'm having a tremendous amount of trouble trying to produce a working SVCD. Here's the steps I've taken. If someone sees an obvious mistake could you help me out?
1. On the Mac, export Timeline to movie from Premiere 6.
2. Under Virtual PC, open the Premiere movie file in QTPro5.
3. Do a 'Save As' in QTPro5 using the standalone movie option.
4. Take the file from step 3 and encode using TMPGenc (select SuperVideoCD NTSC from the Load option) I didn't really change any other settings on the Video or Advanced tabs.
5. Open TSCV, load the .mpg files created above and create some basic menus from other .mpg files that were created similarly using a static image and 5 seconds of blank audio.
6. Create the .cue/.bin
7. Take the .cue file and load it into Toast 5 using the CD-ROM XA option and burn onto CD-RW using Write Disc.
8. Take CD-RW to Pioneer DV434 and get upset. Actually the Pioneer recognizes the disc as a VideoCD, but when I hit play it just hangs there. I never see any image on screen.
So if anyone sees a problem with my process please let me know.
Thanks,
Chris

Again, you can't burn the .bin file itself as one Toast XA track.
You must binchunk it first.
You will obtain two or more XA tracks.
If you burn them instead of the source .BIN, the SVCD will work.
In OS9 you need FireBurner under VirtualPC. In OSX you can use toastXAimager from the VCDtoolsX package and burn the .img files as XA tracks. -
Major,
Thanks for that info. Can you tell me how to binchunk a .bin file? If my SVCD image has one intro movie, a main menu and a chapter menu for each of the two short movies, how many XA tracks would I end up with?
Also is there another option besides Fireburner under VirtualPC. I've downloaded it, but the Wizard returns some kind of an error when I attempt to install it.
Thanks again,
Chris
*also I had made a regular VCD using toast, but in that case I simply burned the .bin file. Is it supposed to work that way for regular VCD or did I just get lucky?

If you use fireburner, just select binchunker, control-click on the window and select the .cue file which comes with the .bin file. Then select all the tracks which will appear, and save in binchunk mode. You will get the files ready to be Toasted in XA mode.

You will get a first XA track for the SVCD filesystem then one XA track for each one of the source MPG files.

Strange. You could try an older version. I use 1.06. You can find it here http://www.fireburner.com/downloads.shtml
Thanks again,

Yes, regular VCDs are burnable with Toast, using the VCD mode and selecting a .bin file. But that doesn't work with SVCDs. -
Major,
Ok, I found the older version of Fireburner and it worked great. So now I've gone complete circle from a Premiere Movie to an SVCD. Thanks for your help. Now I really need to spend some time figuring out the best encoding process. I used TPMGenc to generate one of the mpeg2 files and it was ok. It seemed a little less detailed than the original. The second file was encoded with Cleaner5 on the Mac. It's detail was superb and the colors were rich, however, the motion was very stuttered. Almost like a jerked the camera every second or so. So I've got some more experimenting to do.
I'll post my final results here so maybe it'll help someone else.
Thanks Again,
Chris
