Again, the last option is tempting. But I voted for when it's first out in home video. I'm cheap
Unless it's a new Star Trek movie or LOTR installment, Then it's the first day or two it's in the theaters. -
Hello,
If its SciFi I go the opening weekend. Otherwise I usually wait for the second or third weekend if I really want to see it (to beat the crowds).

unless it's something I'm super-hot to see, I'll wait until it hits the discount / second-run theaters. all the screen size, at 1/4 the price...

I have found Mondays are the best time to see a movie. Where I live there is hardly anyone in the theater on Mondays. I mean it is pretty much empty, 3 to 6 people.
I voted for theatrical run, but I usually go see a movie during the first weekend of release. If it is something I really want to see, I will see it opening day. -
I see a half dozen flicks a year in the cinema. The rest I check out when they're released on DVD.

The best time to see any movie is.....
After the opening commercials are done. the only problem I can see with that is, terrible seating. My only gripe with cinemas pay $12 watch commercials. TV is far cheaper, but you have to watch commercials. -
When The Home Video Goes On Sale...
I like watching a movie for the first time in the comfort of my own home.

Depending on the movie, opening night (or weekend) is best for me. If I don't really care too much about it, then I will wait adn see it later in the theatrical run. I hve gotten surprised a few times. For instance when I saw "A Beautiful Mind" I was not expecting much at all and didn't know too much about it. I was very impressed with the movie and kind of wished I had seen it opening night.
Sometimes when I know it will suck but still want to see it in the theater, I will go to the $1 movie. I did this with "Hulk". But I actually enjoyed "Hulk". It was worthy of more than 1 dollar.
