Now for Sequel: A Movie-Viewing Record
Jul 27, 9:47 am ET
SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Many residents in straight-laced Singapore say there's not much to do except go to the movies -- and three of its citizens have set a record doing just that.
Sprawled out on white couches set up in a local shopping mall for 72 hours, they sat through 36 films and claimed the world movie-watching record, local media reported Monday.
If confirmed by Guinness World Records, the marathon would beat a record of 66 hours and 30 minutes set in New York by 11 people last year, state broadcaster Channel News Asia said.
"The hardest part is in the morning when you get hallucinations and you do not think straight. Basically you were watching the screen, but recording nothing," said Michael Chia, one of the three.
They were the finalists in a contest which began on Thursday.
Contestants were allowed five-minute rest breaks between each movie and a 15-minute break every third film. Twenty-one people dropped out of the contest which ended Sunday, the Straits Times newspaper said.
"I am not going to watch any movie for a really long time," said finalist 24-year-old Fadzli Hussen, who stayed awake despite running a flu and taking medication.
After enduring the 72 hours of mostly classics and family films, the three were quizzed on what they saw. Hussen won S$19,000 ($11,080) for correctly answering the most questions.

What's sad is if you take all the movies I've seen, and watch them all just once, it will take you nearly a full year to see them.
This is with an average of 2 hours per movie and watching 24/7. My IMDB account has a selection called "Movies I've seen" which has just under 3500 different movie titles.
