  1. I am fairly new to this and thought that capturing directly to MPEG-1 (for VCD) makes more sense than AVI->MPG-1. Am I thinking correctly or does this not capture straight to MPG, or is the quality doing this just not there?

    I tried both ways. If you don't need to edit your video it's better to capture stright to MPEG-1 (cut/join is still easy for MPEG).
    But if you want to edit it (for example you wanna add subtitles to your movie or like that) you need to capture to avi, process avi file and then convert to MPEG-1.
