I have found that it depends on the quality of CD's you have. If they're a cheap no-name brand it's best to burn a little less than its max rated burn speed. I bought a cheap spindle of 32x media about a year ago and I was only able to burn at 24x without any errors.

If you can burn vcds at 40x and get no problems then that's great , carry on.
If you find you get discs that skip and jump or don't play then burning at a slower speed may cure the problem.

  4. I still burn VCDs at 16x, even if it is probably not needed for quality media. Had some issues where bad media burnt at 24x would not play in standalone VCD player. Same media worked fine burnt at full speed in my DVD player, but i prefer to be sure its maximum compatible with all players. 16x doesnt take that much longer anyway and has worked in all standalone players i have tested.

  6. I cant say for sure, but i think the ones i had problems with at 24x were Prodisk media, no brand. I found Imation to work well in standalone VCD players but my friend had problems with those in Playstation. Anyway, the Imations i tested was 50 spindles gold with no brand, only on the box it said Imation, could be fake since this was in Philippines, the home of fake and pirated disks. When im in Norway i use only MMORE, needless to say European made disks are not available in S.E. Asia, i just wish they were.

I have some of those right now. They seem decent enough. One way you can check for read errors is by burning 700mb of data on the cd and then when it has completed, try and copy and paste everything from the cd to your hard drive.

Another thing you can do if you have Nero is set it to verify written data. This doesn't work in VCD/SVCD mode though.
